The Batizado

The most important event in a Capoeirista's journey, marking their initiation and progression.

What is a Batizado?

The word "Batizado" literally translates to "baptism". In the world of Capoeira, it is the initiation ceremony where new students receive their first cord (belt) and are officially welcomed into the Capoeira community.

During the Batizado, the student plays with an experienced Capoeirista (usually a Mestre or Professor) and is "baptized" through the game, receiving their nickname (Apelido) and their initial rank.

Troca de Cordas

The Changing of the Belts

For existing students, the event includes the "Troca de Cordas" (Exchange of Cords). This ceremony recognizes the student's growth, commitment, and skill development over the past year.

Ritual

The ceremony is a festive occasion filled with music, energy, and special guests from other schools. It is a time of celebration and renewed dedication to the art.

Evolution

Moving to a new cord isn't just about physical technique; it represents a deeper understanding of the history, music, and philosophy of Capoeira.
